Solidarity Caravan

We stand with you. Helping to fill the void.

Community Service during the Week of Prayer “Fiel es Dios” was a blessing. In fact, it was a divine appointment. We were able to bless the Chorra community.

All week we collected food and other necessities like toilet paper and soap. We made fifteen care packages for the people of the Chorra community.

However, the story doesn’t start there. The story starts with Pastor Ruben Rodriguez who came to pastor the Mayaguez 5 church two years ago. He didn’t just want his church to be a church in his community, but a church for his community. Like he says, “I wanted us to be a church of the streets.”

So, Pastor Ruben and his church started to get to know his community. He realized that there was a great need in the community. He and his church started meeting that need. He started giving out food. Even though the church was small, they even managed to give the community needed utilities.

During a Week of Prayer held at the church, Pastor Ruben met one of the community organizers. She has lived in the Chorra community for 49 years and knows the community well. She helped Pastor Ruben and his church to be even more efficient and effective in helping their community.

In his work, Pastor Ruben reached out to the branch of Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) in his conference. ADRA then reached out to Antillean Adventist University just on time for Week of Prayer. Pastor Abi was told about Pastor Ruben’s work, and he wanted to see the need for himself.

And what a need there was! Fortunately, it just so happened that the Gym-Masters Gymnastics team from Southern University and the Aeros gymnastic team from Great Lakes Adventist Academy were visiting us. There were plenty of people to help meet the needs of the Chorra community.

So, the Gym-Masters, the Aeros and students from Antillean joined forces to paint houses and basketball courts, clean up yards on Friday and give out care packages on Sabbath afternoon. It was not only a blessing for them, but for us.

Ayuda a llenar el vacío

El servicio a la Comunidad este fin de semana fue una bendición. De hecho, era una cita divina. Pudimos ser de bendición para el Barrio La Chorra.

Durante toda esta semana se recogieron alimentos y otras cosas necesarias como papel higiénico y jabón. Hicimos paquetes para ayudar la gente del Barrio La Chorra.

Sin embargo, la historia no comienza aquí. La historia comienza con el Pastor Rubén Rodríguez, quien llegó a ser pastor de la iglesia de Mayagüez 5 hace dos años. Él quería tener un impacto positivo en la comunidad que rodeaba la iglesia. Como él dice, "me gustaría que nuestra iglesia sea una iglesia de alas calles."

Por lo tanto, el pastor Rubén y su iglesia empezó a conocer a su comunidad. Se dio cuenta de que había una gran necesidad en la comunidad. Él y su iglesia comenzaron a suplir estas necesidades. Empezó a dar alimentos. A pesar de que la iglesia era pequeña, se las arreglaron para dar a la comunidad los servicios públicos necesarios.

Durante una semana de oración celebrada en la iglesia, el pastor Rubén conoció a una de las organizadoras de la comunidad. Ella tenía viviendo 49 años en el Barrio La Chorra y conocía bien a la comunidad. Ella ayudó al Pastor Ruben y su iglesia a ser aún más eficiente y eficaz para ayudar a su comunidad.

En su trabajo, el pastor Rubén se acercó a la rama de ADRA en su conferencia. ADRA luego se acercó a la Universidad Adventista de las Antillas justo a tiempo para la Semana de Oración. El Pastor Abi fue informado sobre el trabajo de pastor Rubén y que quería ver la necesidad por sí mismo.

¡Había mucha necesidad! Por fortuna, se dio la casualidad de que el equipo de gimnasia Gym-Masters de la Universidad de Southern y el equipo de gimnasia Aeros de los Grandes Lagos de la Academia Adventista estaban de visita en Puerto Rico. Había un montón de gente para ayudar a satisfacer la necesidad del Barrio La Chorra.

Por lo tanto, los Gym-Masters, GLAA y los estudiantes de la UAA unieron fuerzas para pintar casas y canchas de baloncesto. Limpiaron yardas el viernes y dieron los paquetes de cuidado personal el sábado por la tarde.

No sólo fue una bendición para ellos, pero para nosotros también.
